What Does Performance in Graduate School Predict? Graduate Economics Education and Student Outcomes

چکیده
Economists devote considerable effort to grad uate student education but have conducted rela tively little research on the determinants of student performance or placement in the job market. Do graduate students who do well in core microeco nomics (micro) courses also do well in core mac roeconomics (macro) and econometrics (metrics) courses? Are students who achieve higher grades in their firstyear core classes or general exams more likely to complete their PhD and obtain higher ranked positions in the job market? In an attempt to answer these questions, we assem bled a rich dataset on 1,029 economics graduate students who enrolled at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, Stanford University, or the University of Chicago in the 1990s. These schools were selected because, in 1993, they had the five highest ranked economics PhD programs, accord ing to the National Research Council (NRC). Our results indicate that students’ grades in required core courses are highly correlated across subjects. The PhD admissions com mittee’s evaluation of a student predicts first year grades and PhD completion, but not job placement. What Determines the Performance of Graduates? Selection Versus Quality: Evidence From Top Law Schools
Several studies have examined the factors that influence the performance of college graduates. Some studies have found that a student’s inherent academic ability determines the performance of graduates. Others argue that the quality of the education a student receives determines graduate performance. Ability cannot be directly measured; however, the majority opinion is that both student ability...

Historically, admissions committees for biomedical Ph.D. programs have heavily weighed GRE scores when considering applications for admission. The predictive validity of GRE scores on graduate student success is unclear, and there have been no recent investigations specifically on the relationship between general GRE scores and graduate student success in biomedical research. Data from Vanderbi...

متن کاملThe Returns to Quality in Graduate Education
This paper estimates the monetary return to quality in U.S. graduate education, controlling for cognitive ability and self-selection across award level, program quality, and field-of-study. In most program types, I cannot reject the hypothesis of no returns to either degree completion or program quality. Important exceptions include master’s programs in health science, where completion substant...
متن کاملCDIO as an Enabler for Graduate Attributes Assessment: A Canadian Case Study
Recent changes to the criteria for engineering accreditation in Canada emphasize continuous curriculum improvement through outcomes-based assessment. In this article, the authors show how the CDIO (ConceiveDesign-Implement-Operate) approach not only enables continuous improvement, but can assist Canadian engineering programs with the overall graduate attributes assessment process through a case...
